Resume & CV Tips

  • Formatting: Use simple and consistent formatting, check for typos.

  • Relevance: Include what’s relevant for the specific role.  Read the job description and bump up any experience you have that matches the role requirements. 

  • Highlight Education: Since you're a graduate applicant, your education section should be prominent. Include details about your degree(s), university name, graduation date, GPA (if it's strong), relevant coursework, and any academic honors or awards.

  • Quantify Achievements: Wherever possible, quantify your achievements to provide context and demonstrate your impact. For example, mention the number of projects completed, the percentage of improvement achieved, or the size of the team you lead.

  • Include Extracurricular Activities: Don't underestimate the value of extracurricular activities. Include involvement in clubs, student organizations, sports teams, volunteer work, or leadership roles. These experiences can demonstrate teamwork, leadership, time management, and other valuable skills.

  • Keep it Concise: Your CV should be no longer than one or two pages. Keep it concise and focused on the most relevant information, such as your education, skills, experiences, and achievements.

Interview Tips

  • Be familiar with your resume and prepare examples from your education, internships, part-time jobs, volunteer work, or extracurricular activities that demonstrate relevant skills and accomplishments.

  • Research IPS, what we do, and why you would like to work with us. Understand our mission, values, culture, and service as well as any recent achievements.

  • Be prepared to discuss your relevant experiences, projects, and accomplishments that demonstrate your skill set.

  • Use the STAR format when responding to interview questions.

  • Practice, practice, practice!! Practice answering common interview questions such as:

    • "Tell me about yourself"

    • "Why do you want this job?"

    • "What are your strengths and weaknesses?"

  • Practice articulating your responses concisely and confidently.

  • Ask thoughtful questions. Prepare some questions to ask about the company, team dynamics, growth opportunities, or the specific role. This demonstrates your interest in the position and helps you gather valuable information to make an informed decision if an offer is extended.
